What actually helps your bouquet last longer — and what’s just fluff
So you just got a bouquet (yay!), and you want to keep it looking fresh for as long as possible.
We’re here to help you skip the myths and get straight to the flower-care habits that actually make a difference — especially in Singapore’s warm, humid climate.
Whether it’s roses, lilies, or sunflowers — these simple habits will keep your bouquet brighter, longer.
5 Flower-Care Habits That Actually Work
Trim the stems (yes, again)
Do this immediately after unwrapping — even if we’ve already trimmed them for you. Cut about 1–2cm off at a 45° angle, under running water. This removes any air blockages and helps flowers drink better.
🛑 Don’t crush stems — just a clean cut will do.
Change the water daily
Sounds basic, but it’s often skipped.Clean water = no bacteria = longer vase life. Use room temperature water — not cold — and make sure the vase is cleaned every 2–3 days too.
Keep away from direct sun, heat, and fruit
Sunlight, fans, or aircon blowouts will dry petals faster. Also keep flowers away from ripening fruit — ethylene gas speeds up aging.
Best spot? A cool corner with soft light and good air circulation.
Remove wilted petals and leaves
As soon as you spot any fading or dropped leaves in the water, remove them. They breed bacteria and shorten the life of the rest of the bouquet.
Use a clean vase — always
Residue from old water is invisible, but deadly to fresh stems. Even if the vase “looks” clean, give it a quick rinse with hot water and a drop of dish soap before each refill.
2 Flower “Hacks” That Don’t Really Work
“Just Add Sugar and Vinegar” — Not Always Necessary
You may have seen our Reel where we shared a DIY flower food recipe (sugar, vinegar, water). And yes — it can help in some cases by feeding the flowers and keeping bacteria in check.
But here’s the truth:If your bouquet is already fresh and pre-trimmed, you’ll get similar results just by changing water daily and keeping the vase clean.DIY flower food is a bonus, not a must.
Tip: Only use it if you’re skipping daily water changes.
Ice cubes in the vase
Chilling the water seems like a smart way to slow wilting — but most tropical and imported flowers (like Kenya roses) prefer room temperature hydration.
Cold shocks the stems and reduces water intake.
